Bimbi nació en San Juan, pero decía que le cortaron el ombligo en Luquillo. Se sentía muy diferente, diferente bien, cuando llegábamos a Luquillo. Le cambiaba el semblante, sonreía más y mejor, respiraba, bailaba, cocinaba, cosía, cantaba, dormía, todo mucho mejor que en donde vivíamos. Cuando nos acercábamos a los Kioskos de Luquillo, ya el panorama cambiaba totalmente para ella. Y para mí. Por lo general, al llegar a los Kioskos ella miraba alrededor, a un lado el mar, precioso, saludable, desafiante, invitador. Al otro, las montañas verdes, cada vez menos verdes, cada vez más urbanizadas, pero todavía bellas, imponentes, serenas. A ambos lados de la carretera, los flamboyanes. Esa combinación de campo-playa que le fascinaba y me fascina. Yo, primero la miraba a ella y luego al panorama. Ver su felicidad, su euforia, su contentura y su paz al estar en este lugar donde decía le cortaron el ombligo, era una fiesta.
Bimbi era la Madre que me parió. Por supuesto, ese no era su nombre, pero así fue bautizada por su nieto mayor, que se negaba a llamarla “abuelita” y prefería “bimbilita”. Más fácil, verdad, por lo menos para él. Así, haciendo lo que siempre hacemos, abreviar, se quedó Bimbi para todo el que la conocía.
Y, ¿cómo llegamos a Luquillo? Pues, érase una vez que tuvimos un familiar muy enfermo, que requería mucha atención, especialmente atención emocional. Con todo nuestro amor y dedicación lo atendimos y ayudamos en todo lo posible y hasta algún que otro imposible. La experiencia fue muy enriquecedora y positiva, pero a la vez muy absorbente y agotadora. Necesitábamos, en especial Bimbi, un descanso, despejarnos, cambiar de ambiente por un tiempo. Con ese propósito, mientras yo trabajaba y sin comentarme nada, ella se dedicó a buscar algún lugar donde pudiéramos pasar unos días. Consiguió un matrimonio que alquilaba un apartamento en Luquillo por períodos cortos. Se comunicó con la señora, hicieron el trato y listo. Cuando llegué del trabajo me la encuentro recogiendo lo que nos íbamos a llevar para pasar unos días en la playa. Me había preparado una lista de lo que necesitaba para hacer el negocio con la señora, porque, ¡sorpresa! el contrato era conmigo. Ah, y tenía que ir a preparar mis cosas, porque estaba retrasada. Jaja, así era ella, y yo, que le reía las gracias y me dejaba llevar.
Nos fuimos, con una “pequeña” mudanza, sin conocer a los dueños de este apartamento, sin haber visto nunca el lugar, pensando en cuentos de horror que habíamos escuchado de otros que emprendían aventuras similares. ¿Qué hay si cuando lleguemos no hay agua, o electricidad? ¿Y si está sucio, y si las camas no sirven, y si no es como nos lo pintaron? Bueno, pues, nos arriesgamos, pa’ eso que somos guapitas las dos. Ay, Dios mío.
Primeramente conocimos a la dueña, hicimos el intercambio de documentos, llaves y pago correspondiente. La señora era de esas personas que a los dos minutos de hablar con ella, parece que la conoces de toda la vida. Ella también se sintió muy cómoda con nosotras. De hecho, desarrollamos una muy buena relación con ella y su esposo y encontramos coincidencias entre ambas familias, que no hubiéramos podido imaginar. Acordamos un mínimo de días inicialmente, por aquello de que si encontrábamos alguna sorpresita que nos obligara a regresar antes de tiempo, no sería grande la pérdida. Dejamos abierta la posibilidad de extender el contrato con una llamada telefónica, si decidíamos quedarnos más tiempo.
¡Y arrancamos para Luquillo! Esa fue la primera vez que pude observar ese cambio que se producía en Bimbi cuando llegaba al área. Esto a pesar de la ansiedad y la duda que persistió hasta que vimos el apartamento. Sabíamos que los guardias de seguridad del edificio no tienen la obligación de ayudar con “pequeñas” mudanzas como la nuestra, su trabajo es de vigilancia y protección. Pero al llegar encontramos un guardia de seguridad muy amable y cortés, que ofreció acompañarnos al apartamento, ayudarnos a cargar paquetes y hasta verificar que todo estuviera bien.
A la hora de la verdad, Bimbi se puso un poco cobarde, después que me metió en el lío, y prefirió que yo viera el apartamento antes que ella. Iba caminando detrás de mi con una cara de ¡ea, rayo, en qué lío nos habremos metido! Ya habíamos discutido que, si encontrábamos desastre, simplemente haríamos el viaje de regreso y a seguir buscando. Pero, tan pronto el guardia de seguridad abrió la puerta, ¡veo ese mar que llenaba casi todo el espacio visual, y noto que el apartamento era pequeño como esperábamos, pero limpio y acogedor! Y le digo a Bimbi: “Te va a gustar.” La cara de alivio fue casi tan buena como la de paz y felicidad que vi todas las veces que nos acercábamos a los Kioskos de Luquillo.
Nos acomodamos y luego fuimos a caminar por la playa. ¡Otra bendición! El ambiente de playa nos llenó los pulmones, el corazón y la mente. Fue un sobito espiritual, era lo que necesitábamos. Y, por si fuera poco, tuvimos la compañía de una representante del comité de recepción. Era una perrita recién parida, que nos recibió desde que salimos del edificio, caminó con nosotras todo lo que quisimos y pudimos caminar, nos acompañó en nuestros descansos y nos esperó cuando estábamos un poco lentas. En esos descansos se entretenía sacando jueyitos de sus cuevas y jugando con ellos, pobrecitos. Yo siempre sospeché que nos estaba vigilando para que no descubriéramos dónde tenía su cría, pero luego me enteré que no, era amor desinteresado. Nos acompañó todos los días que duró nuestro descanso-aventura y el último día, como si lo supiera, ¡nos presentó dos de sus cachorritos!
De más está decir que decidimos quedarnos un poco más de lo planificado inicialmente. De hecho, Bimbi quedó tan enamorada de la experiencia y el lugar, que hizo arreglos para que alquiláramos -léase: que yo alquilara- este apartamento por tiempo prolongado. Así fue como lo tuvimos por alrededor de un año. Muy pronto ella decidió que le gustaría tener un apartamento en Luquillo, ya fuera para vivir permanentemente o para pasar temporadas. Durante algún tiempo estuvimos buscando una propiedad, pero por diferentes razones, no se nos daba. Eventualmente, cuando y como menos lo esperábamos, apareció el “novio”, el apartamento del que nos enamoramos. Decidimos vivir aquí, lo que ella no pudo hacer. Así que pasaba días y semanas, sin mudarse completamente. Ella pudo disfrutarlo sólo durante dos años. Siempre que venía tenía algún proyecto entre manos, que por lo general era de comida o costura. Me secuestraba la cocina y el comedor, y hacía todo el despliegue necesario para hacer unos ricos pasteles o sabrosas alcapurrias. O se adueñaba del comedor y lo convertía en salón de costura. Hizo cortinas, fundas de almohadas, batas para ella y para mí, me dejó piezas de ropa cortadas para que yo las cosiera y no recuerdo cuántas otras cosas.
Me gustaría que todavía estuviera aquí, pero no pudo ser. Sin embargo, cuando veo en mis recuerdos ese cambio que se producía en ella cuando llegábamos, el entusiasmo con el que emprendía cualquiera que fuera el proyecto que tuviera entre manos y la paz que sentía aquí, no puedo evitar alegrarme, sentirme feliz por ella y celebrar el resultado de esta aventura.
