Todos hemos escuchado ésta o explicaciones similares cuando nos referimos a algunas víctimas del crimen. Por lo general se trata de las que no necesariamente están relacionadas con el llamado bajo mundo o a quienes han confundido con otra persona y fueron atacadas o asesinadas “por error”. A veces también se usa esta expresión para describir otros sucesos negativos o desagradables con los que, obviamente, no contábamos.
Yo, siempre buscándole cinco patas al gato, me pregunto cuán correcta o cierta es esta explicación. Lo primero que pienso es que no existen lugares ni momentos equivocados, personas equivocadas sí. Quizás al analizar esto es que me molesta tanto la expresión. Siento que están culpando a la víctima del crimen porque “se equivocó de lugar o de momento”. Y la verdad es, que el crimen y sucesos desagradables pueden llegar a nosotros no importa el lugar o el momento en que nos encontremos.
Hace algún tiempo vi en un noticiario la entrevista a una joven víctima del crimen. Su hermana había sido asesinada. No había ninguna explicación para este crimen, no tenía por qué suceder. (¡Como si hubiera explicación para algún crimen! Bueno, pero ese es otro tema.) Muchas personas, comenzando por los oficiales de ley y orden, y continuando con periodistas y observadores, resumieron el asunto con el consabido “estaba en el lugar equivocado, en el momento equivocado”. La hermana de la joven asesinada pidió que dejaran de dar esa explicación. Su hermana, dijo, era una mujer joven, alegre, llena de vida, normal. Como tal, tenía derecho a salir a estudiar, trabajar, divertirse o realizar la actividad que necesitara o quisiera, sin esperar que eso significara que la podían lastimar o matar porque “estaba en el lugar equivocado, en el momento equivocado”. Esa joven hermana dijo que el que estaba en el lugar equivocado, en el momento equivocado era el delincuente, el asesino que le quitó la vida a su hermana. Me dije: ¡palabras con luz! Eso es lo cierto, nadie tiene que estar en ningún lugar, en ningún momento para hacerle daño a otra persona, mucho menos para quitarle la vida. Los asesinos son los que están bien equivocados de lugar y de momento, siempre.
Cierto, lo razonable y sensato es tomar precauciones, prevenir, porque todos sabemos que no vivimos en un mundo libre de crimen ni delincuencia. Pero, prevenir ¿significará dejar de trabajar, comprar, divertirnos, visitar, ayudar, funcionar, vivir? No creo. La explicación del suceso no puede recaer siempre sobre la víctima. De hecho, nunca debería recaer sobre la víctima. Puede ser que con nuestro descuido, omisión o falta de precaución facilitemos que los delincuentes actúen. Pero no lo provocamos, no tomamos la decisión, no compartimos la responsabilidad individualmente. Sí la compartimos, en parte, como sociedad. Y de eso se ha hablado y escrito muchísimo. Cierto, hay mucho que podemos hacer como sociedad. Las organizaciones gubernamentales y civiles tienen y asumen la responsabilidad de prevenir, procesar, castigar, y supuestamente, rehabilitar.
Lamentablemente, tanto las autoridades como los ciudadanos al parecer hemos llegado a tal grado de aceptación de lo negativo, que damos por sentado que personas que andan “en malos pasos” se van a matar unos a otros. Y algunos hasta dicen: “Él, o ella, no tenía nada que ver con el asunto. No tenían que matarlo, matarla.” Ah, pero entonces, sí pueden matar a otro que está en malos pasos. Pues no, no hay que matar a nadie, ¿con qué derecho?
Hay quien dice que las palabras tienen peso. Yo también lo creo. Si constantemente dices de tu hijo que hace maldades que ese muchacho está medio loco, con el tiempo el muchacho se lo cree, o piensa que los demás lo creen, y lo usa como excusa. También creo que muchas veces no le damos a las palabras todo el peso que tienen. Y seguimos repitiendo como el papagayo, expresiones como “estaba en el lugar equivocado, en el momento equivocado.” sin darnos cuenta del sentido de lo que decimos y el efecto que tienen nuestras palabras en otros. Por eso pienso que, fuera de las acciones de las autoridades, hay algo que todos podemos hacer y es cuidar nuestras expresiones y evitar torturar a las víctimas del crimen, o de otras situaciones negativas, con nuestras actitudes y expresiones.
