Los que leyeron “Una fresita me llevó al Centro Médico…”, recordarán que les conté los sucesos que me llevaron al Centro Médico como huésped involuntaria durante cuatro días. También les mencioné que allí conocí a unos personajes exquisitos, que llevaron a cabo obras dignas de verse en teatro o televisión, la mayoría de éstas, tragicomedias.
Pues he aquí algunos de los personajes. Todos son reales. Conozco los nombres de algunos, pero, por supuesto, no los usaré. A todos los he “bautizado” con los nombres que sentí, a veces bien profundo en mi corazón, otras en el estómago. Por supuesto, la trama principal de esta historia fue la mía, la que les narré anteriormente. Pero, como les dije, también había subtramas. Y algunas, como en las series de televisión, se conectaban.
Personajes: Dra. Milagro, Confinados, Mamá Parlanchina, Mamá Sufrida, Doctora Tacos, “Deambulante”, Boxeador y su Mamá, Hombre Obsceno de Ley y Orden, Viejo Verde Obsceno y su Esposa La Más Obscena, Enfermera Actriz, Doctor Bisturí, Doctor Bebé Favorito, Doctora Salvadora Capacitada, Técnicos Normales, Enfermeras Alerta, Paciente que no Debió Serlo.
La Doctora ¡Milagro! Posiblemente éste fue el primer personaje que pude definir. Creo que su comportamiento me hizo recordar a otros personajes con los que he lidiado a través de la vida, esos que no hacen lo que deben a menos que quieran impresionar a alguien. Ella fue la primera médica con la que hablé en la Sala de Emergencia. A pesar de explicarle mi situación, el riesgo que corría, la coordinación que se había hecho para atenderme, no mostró ningún interés ni inclinación a ayudar. No pareció entender ni darle importancia a la seriedad de la situación. Lo único que se le pidió fue tratar de localizar al médico que me iba a atender. Pero no, no estaba interesada. No es que estuviera muy ocupada, tampoco tenía pacientes esperando. Simplemente no estaba interesada en ayudar, no conocía a nadie, no sabía nada, tampoco sabía dónde buscar información o no quería hacerlo. Sin embargo, tan pronto llegaron el dentista que me atendía y el gastroenterólogo que me iba a atender, se volvió toda sonrisas, disposición y hasta amabilidad. ¡Milagro!
Confinados. Qué decir de estas pobres criaturas. Sí, ya sé, no son, como dicen por ahí, hermanitas de la caridad. Pero son seres humanos, como usted y como yo. Sí, también sé que algunos hacen sus trampitas para que los saquen del penal, aunque sea por un rato. Pero, por lo menos los que vi allí, estaban sufriendo mucho por enfermedades o lesiones, eran pacientes al igual que todos los que estábamos allí. Y algo que se acentuaba en el trato del personal médico hacia ellos, y que también sufrieron otros pacientes, fue el discrimen. Me sentí muy afectada por la presencia de algunos de ellos tan cerca de mí. Sentí temor de algunos, porque se levantaban de las camillas, caminaban por todo el pasillo donde estábamos esperando atención, amenazaban a todo el que estuviera a su paso y gritaban sin parar. Y no todas las palabras que gritaban están en los diccionarios, no, no, no. También sentí compasión, porque veía que en verdad estaban sufriendo, llevaban mucho tiempo esperando y ni siquiera les habían preguntado por qué estaban allí. Y para completar, el sonido de las cadenas con los que los restringen es espantoso.
Mamá Parlanchina. Ésta era una mujer muy joven, muy bonita, pero muuuuy loquita. Qué pena. Parecía buena persona, pero muy desorientada. Sufre de una enfermedad crónica que la lleva al hospital con frecuencia. Tenía consigo a una jovencita, una niña, que nos dijo era su hija, y no aparentaba más de doce años. Como allí requieren que el acompañante del paciente sea mayor de edad, la niña de momento cumplió los dieciocho. Nadie le creyó, pero me imagino que ya fuera por pena o por descuido, se lo pasaron por alto y le permitieron estar allí. La niña apenas habló, pero la mamá hablaba por ella y por todos nosotros. Hablaba de todos los temas y a una velocidad extenuante. No hacía pausas, conectaba un tema con otro con una facilidad increíble. Ella fue mi compañera de cubículo durante unas horas, cuando nos pasaron del pasillo a una Sala de Tratamiento. Recuerdo que un momento antes de que la movieran al lado mío, le había comentado a mi acompañante que a lo mejor podía “pescar” un sueñito, lo que era imposible en aquel pasillo. Jaja, no contaba con este personaje. Ella protagonizó la obra “Te Cargaré el Celular”. En ésta un “paciente” que no lo era, hizo amistad con ella y su niña mientras estábamos todos en el pasillo. Luego la visitó en el cubículo y hasta creo que le hizo algún favor. Curiosamente, estaba acompañado de la Enfermera Actriz, que participó en la broma y el intercambio festivo que se dio allí. Como la pobre Mamá Parlanchina hablaba tanto, él se enteró de que tenía su celular descargado. “Ajá, la atrapé”, debe haberse dicho. Le ofreció llevárselo al pasillo, donde lo cargaría con el equipo de otro amigo. La pobre cayó en la trampa. Jamás volvió a ver el celular ni al benefactor. La dieron de alta y no tenía teléfono para pedir transportación. Además tuvo que lidiar con guardias de seguridad, otros pacientes y enfermeros, entre ellos la Enfermera Actriz, que la trataron de tonta por caer en la trampa. Nadie explicó por qué ese hombre tenía acceso a toda el área si no era paciente ni empleado y, supuestamente, nadie sabía quién era.
Mamá Sufrida. Ay, ay, ay, esta señora sí que nos hizo sufrir a mis acompañantes y a mí hasta las lágrimas. Era una mujer muy mayor, muy enferma, muy adolorida y, lo peor, muy sola. Sola de las que tienen hijos, hermanos, sobrinos, gatos y perros, pero no tienen a nadie, por abandono. Gritaba de dolor de una manera desgarradora. Los tres acompañantes que tuve en cuatro días tuvieron que intervenir en algún momento para que la atendieran. El caso de esta señora fue uno de los que más evidenció las terribles condiciones de ese lugar. Por la falta de privacidad, todos nos enteramos de su historia familiar, su historia clínica y lo difícil de manejar que era su caso. Sufrimos verla y escucharla llorar y pedir que viniera su hija. Ésta “no podía” venir al hospital porque estaba en una relación de pareja nueva, que no se lo permitía. Eso era más importante. Allí vimos a esa mujer suplicarle a la hija, cuando por fin hizo el “sacrificio” de venir a ver a su madre, que no la abandonara, que aunque fuera un rato estuviera con ella. Vimos a los médicos, enfermeros, trabajadores sociales tratar de ocuparse de ella más que su propia familia. Y también vimos a los que se acostumbraron a sus gritos y ya no le hacían caso. Una verdadera tragedia.
Doctora Tacos. Esta joven doctora parecía una modelo. Preciosa, muy arreglada y compuesta. Demasiado, diría yo, para estar en un hospital y sobre todo, atender pacientes durante largas horas. Tenía tremendos pulmones, hablaba tan alto que creo la escuchaban en el estacionamiento. Gracias a eso, todos nos enterábamos de lo que hablaba con sus pacientes. Ya saben, privacidad ante todo. Caminaba rapidísimo, de un lado para otro, despertando pacientes aquí y allá. Pero los despertaba no sólo con su vozarrón, sino también con sus zapatos. No, no, no les pegaba con ellos. Ella consiguió las plataformas más altas que pudo encontrar y caminaba montada en aquellas cosas todo el día. Ustedes dirán que eso es problema de ella. Sí, claro, si no hubiera hecho tanto ruido. Entre el vozarrón y los tacos, nadie más podía hablar mientras ella estuviera allí. Y descansar, ni soñarlo.
Boxeador y su Mamá. Estos fueron dos de mis personajes favoritos. El Boxeador era un jovencito de unos diecisiete años. Tenía una enfermedad congénita para la que requería cierto tratamiento y por eso estaba allí. El joven era muy educado, servicial y, pudimos comprobar, de muy buenos sentimientos. Su Mamá era la típica mamá gallina. No sólo lo atendía a él en el hospital, sino que estaba pendiente por teléfono o como fuera, de sus otros hijos que estaban en la casa, y adoptó a unos cuantos desvalidos allí en el hospital. Esta Mamá y su hijo Boxeador fueron claves en la atención y cuidado del “Deambulante”. La señora era un poco parecida a la Mamá Parlanchina, pero tenía un corazón tan grande, que eso se le podía pasar por alto.
“Deambulante”. El discrimen en el trato a los pacientes fue bien evidente, especialmente en el caso de un caballero sin hogar, de esos que llamamos “deambulantes”. Estaba enfermo con cáncer, vino referido de un hospital de otro pueblo y necesitaba cirugía. Tanto él como otros pacientes se quejaron debido a que algunas enfermeras no querían atenderlo porque olía mal. ¡Cómo no iba a oler mal, si vive en la calle, expuesto a todo, no tiene hogar! Además, no tenía ropa y sólo le suplieron un pañal o “pamper”. Ni siquiera le dieron una sábana para arroparse. Familiares y acompañantes de otros pacientes, entre ellos la Mamá del Boxeador, fueron los que se ocuparon de conseguirle algo para vestir y para abrigarse. No sólo eso, el Boxeador compro comida para este hombre tan desvalido. Una noche tuvo una emergencia, aparentemente por convulsiones. Lo atendieron su compañero de cubículo y su acompañante, el Boxeador y su Mamá. Había que ver las velocidades de las enfermeras para llegar hasta la cama de este ser humano: lenta, lentísima y detenida, o “pará”, en puertorriqueño. Jamás llamaron a un médico que atendiera esta emergencia, a pesar de los reclamos de todos los pacientes y acompañantes.
Hombre Obsceno de Ley y Orden, Viejo Verde Obsceno y su Esposa, la Más Obscena. La segunda noche que pasé en esta locura, fui testigo y víctima, junto con otros pacientes y acompañantes, de la falta de control, de compasión y de profesionalismo reinante allí, en todo su apogeo. Desde el mediodía aproximadamente, había todo un espectáculo de chistes, palabras soeces, bromas de mal gusto y sabe Dios qué más, en el cubículo siguiente al mío. Esta obra debe haberse llamado “Cual de los Tres Más Obsceno”. Dos caballeros, que por cierto, estaban muy mal de salud, y sus familiares y “público” hablaban y se reían a todo volumen, sin consideración alguna para los demás. Uno de ellos era El Hombre Obsceno de Ley y Orden. ¿Por qué lo bauticé así? Este bautismo fue de los que me salió del estómago. El señor se jactaba todo el tiempo de que había trabajado en posiciones de alto nivel, en agencias de ley y orden del gobierno. Además, es abogado licenciado. Nada de eso le sirvió para algo tan elemental como respetar los derechos de los demás. Tampoco para reconocer cómo se debe comportar un ser humano en un hospital. El otro caballero, El Viejo Verde Obsceno, era una persona de las que llamamos comunes y corrientes. Me gustaría pensar que su comportamiento no es ni tan común ni tan corriente, por nuestro bien. Ese señor y su Esposa, la Más Obscena, demostraron tener las mentes y vocabularios más podridos que nos podamos imaginar. No favorezco el uso de palabras soeces, pero tampoco me espantan demasiado. Sé que hay personas que las utilizan sin la intención de ofender, ya forman parte de su manera de hablar. Pero esto era otra cosa. El Viejo Verde Obsceno, además de los chistes sucios y las palabras soeces, se puso fresco con las enfermeras, y hasta conmigo, cuando fui a pedirles que bajaran el volumen. Nos preguntábamos qué hacían allí esas personas. ¡Es un hospital, no un teatro ni un club de Las Vegas! O, ¿será que nos equivocamos y realmente no estábamos en un hospital, sino en un club de mala muerte? ¿Serían los medicamentos que les dieron a estos “pacientes” los que les sacaron los monstruos? El público de esta “obra teatral”, algunos de los que también sirvieron de actores, se componía de los acompañantes de estos “pacientes”, enfermeras, sí, entre ellas la Enfermera Actriz, otros pacientes y sus acompañantes. No se limitaban a los de esa sala, ¡también vinieron de otras salas cercanas! Ay, madre, a lo mejor vendieron boletos por todo el área. Nadie podía conversar con sus acompañantes, mucho menos dormir o descansar. Ningún miembro del personal tomó acción, hasta que hablé con la Enfermera Actriz, horas después de estar soportando y pidiéndole a esas personas que bajaran la voz. No valieron las medicinas que les aplicaron, ni el regaño mongo de la enfermera. Sólo se calmaron cuando dos empleados de seguridad les hablaron en voz muy baja pero muy firme, y los amenazaron con sacarlos del hospital. Esto ocurrió poco después de las 2:00 a.m.
Doctor Bisturí, Doctor Bebé Favorito, Doctora Salvadora Capacitada, Técnicos Normales, Enfermeras Alerta. Éste fue parte del equipo que me atendió durante mi estadía. Aparentemente había dos equipos con sendas visiones y propuestas. En uno de ellos estaba el Doctor Bisturí. Es un joven Residente de Cirugía que parecía andar con el bisturí en la mano todo el tiempo, listo para operar. Éste, por cierto, veía las radiografías de forma diferente a como las veíamos los técnicos de radiología, otros médicos y yo. Siempre veía la fresita, el objeto culpable de todo esto, más arriba que lo que la veíamos los demás. En el otro equipo, más conservador, estaban el Doctor Bebé Favorito, la Doctora Salvadora Capacitada, los Técnicos Normales y alguna que otra Enfermera Alerta. Bauticé al Doctor Bebé Favorito así porque aparentaba tener unos catorce años. Claro, es joven, pero no tanto. Es que, según me dicen, mientras más viejos estamos, más jóvenes vemos a los demás. ¡Confesiones, jaja! Este doctor estaba muy claro en cuanto a mi situación, tenía la paciencia de escucharme y contestar mis preguntas y se interesaba en mí como paciente, más allá de la posible cirugía. La Doctora Salvadora Capacitada, también era muy profesional, muy centrada, inspiraba confianza. Vale decir que esta joven ya había hecho Residencia en Dallas, Texas, pero decidió regresar a Puerto Rico. Entonces, tuvo que comenzar de nuevo el proceso. Así es que sabe lo que es el trabajo y el sacrificio. Cuando tuvimos situaciones complicadas entre los dos equipos, ella por lo general fue quien resolvió e intervino a mi favor. Ambos trataban de hacerme sentir lo más cómoda posible, dentro de la situación. Me informaban que la cirugía seguía siendo una posibilidad, pero no era la única. Tampoco tenían prisa, ya que yo no demostraba síntomas que lo justificaran. Los Técnicos Normales y las Enfermeras Alerta fueron también una bendición, dentro de toda la locura. Fueron muy profesionales, amables y considerados. Casi hicieron una fiesta cuando por fin estuve “fresita-free”. Entre las Enfermeras Alerta estuvo la que notó que no tenía brazalete de identificación, luego de haber estado horas registrada en el sistema, haber pasado por un procedimiento con anestesia y por radiografías. También estuvieron las que se preocuparon por mi dieta y me hicieron la vida un poco menos difícil.
Paciente que no Debió Serlo. Como me quedé conectada al Centro Médico, por bien o por mal, me enteré al día siguiente de salir, que una de las pacientes compañera de sala a quien le habían diagnosticado un trombo de esos que pueden hacer grandes maldades, no tenía ningún trombo. Fue un diagnóstico erróneo. “Ay, perdón, me equivoqué.” Ah, tampoco le habían dicho que estaba de alta desde hacía dos días. ¿Saben cómo se enteró? Se lo dijeron cuando fue a indagar por qué el médico no había vuelto a visitarla.
Pero, no se preocupen, no ha pasado nada. Todo normal, verdad. Pues esta es mi catarsis, después de una experiencia tan contaminante para el cuerpo, la mente y el espíritu. El ver y expresar las cosas de esta manera ayuda a transformar experiencias negativas en unas que pueden ser enriquecedoras y, ¿por qué no?, hasta divertidas.
